2025 HKU PGSA
"Hong Kong Through the Camera:
My Journey with the City"
Photography Competition

Judging Result

The 2025 HKU PGSA Photography Competition, themed "Hong Kong Through the Camera: My Journey with the City," has received over three hundred outstanding works from HKU students. Photographers have captured the unique charm of this bustling metropolis through their lenses, seizing the ever-changing street scenes, recording the lively markets, freezing the tranquility of a leisurely afternoon street corner, exploring the beautiful scenery of the city outskirts, and presenting a variety of rich and colorful stories.

After public voting, internal review by the HKU PGSA, and careful selection by professional judge, it is now time to reveal these remarkable works that possess extraordinary artistic expression and profound connotations!

First Prize

There Is Another World

(Cai Sirui)

The photo was taken in Central, Hong Kong. As Hong Kong's financial center, Central symbolizes success, efficiency and modernity. It is often regarded as a synonym for “success” and even given a filtered aura, but behind this is often hidden pressure, competition and inner emptiness. The slogan “THERE IS ANOTHER WORLD” on the billboard directly points out the theme of the work, which is like a silent reminder, telling the viewer that there is another possibility beyond the standard answer of the real world here. It is a call to the spiritual world, or an exploration of an ideal life, inner peace or unknown territory. It breaks the definition of Central given by the world and invites people chasing their dreams in Hong Kong to think: what is the “another world” that really belongs to them? The iconic red cab pulls into the darkness and suggests this transition and transformation, symbolizing the courageous exploration and beginnings of all.

Second Prize

Steps of Serenity

(Manson Yim)

This photograph captures a moment of introspection in Hong Kong, where vibrant neon lights intersect with a modern skyline. A solitary figure on the steps symbolizes my journey through the city’s rich tapestry of tradition and innovation. The interplay of light and shadow encourages a dialogue between the soul and the metropolis as I capture the visual stories woven into the streets.

Third Prize

Golden Whisper

(Chen Yuhan)

Dusk paints M+ Museum's halls in Hong Kong, while a sudden play of light stumbles into my lens.
As if all the city's noise could melt into Victoria Harbour's gentle golden ripples.

As evening falls over Hong Kong, a busy street climbs steeply up the hillside. At the top, a chapel stands quietly, bathed in light from above.
